Sharon Jones, State Theater

Prior to May 17, 2011, I knew a few things about Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings: they played the 2010 Rock the Garden concert, one of the band members lived in the Twin Cities for a period of time and that she is peaking later in her career.

What I learned after seeing her in concert at the State Theater, from deep in the balcony, is that she knows how to work the stage. And the dress she wore (pictured above) was a critical piece of her winning performance.

The way she moved in her dress evoked a whole series of adjectives which I expect have a little something to do with who she is but if I give myself one word it would be spunk.

Remember, I am waaay back in the balcony near the growing party of people oblivious that there is a concert going on. And I can clearly see her rocking the fringe of her dress while she belts out soulful song after soulful song.

In addition to the way the fringe moves, other things I love about the dress:

  • Black and white makes a simple, bold graphic statement, easy to see from the rafters.
  • The cut and shape of the dress flatters her body – not too tight or too loose.
  • The size of the horizontal stripes is proportional with her size and they weren’t just straight across – they had a little curve to them to soften the line.
  • The hem length is perfect for an entertainer boasting 55 years and counting.

Whomever picked out this dress – congratulations, it is a perfect fit!
